Khichdi with Moong Dal Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup moong dal - skinless yellow lentils

  • 1 cup rice

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder

  • 1 tablespoon oil

  • 1 tablespoon ghee - for topping

  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds

  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds

  • 1 tablespoon of cilantro

  • 6 cups of water

  • 1 bowl of yogurt

Instant Pot Recipe:

1. Soak moong dal in water for about half an hour.

2. Add rice and wash it together twice. Drain the water.

3. Start instant pot on saute mode.

4. Add oil, mustard seeds and cumin seeds.

5. When heated, the seeds will start to spur.

6. Add turmeric powder.

7. Add the rice and moong dal mix to it.

8. Stir it for about 1 minute.

9. Add 6 cups of water (the ratio of rice & dal mix to water is 1 : 3 times).

10. Add salt to taste.

11. Close the lid of instant pot, whistle in sealing mode.

12. Pressure cook on high pressure for 10 minutes.

13. Instant pot will beep when it is done.

14. Wait for the pressure to release on its own. (It takes about 10 minutes)

15. Open the lid, stir khichdi, top with ghee and garnish with cilantro.

16. Enjoy it with fresh curd.

  • It is an anti-inflammatory and protein rich diet

  • It is easy to digest hence fed during any sickness.

Variation -

Khichdi is also made using other lentils like toor dal or moong dal with green skin. It can also be cooked with mix vegetables or one can simmer it with onions and tomatoes after it is ready also known as masala khichdi.

Note: You can also use a simple pressure cooker to cook khichdi. Let it cook until 4 whistles. Open the cooker after 15 minutes and khichdi is ready to eat! Enjoy!
